The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) published a Memorandum to all school districts on September 30, 2014 regarding Reporting Student Absences. In summary, recently adopted New Jersey administrative code language in N.J.A.C. 6A:16-7.6 had some conflicting language with the directions in the School Register used for Federal and State reporting regarding excused and unexcused absences.
The NJDOE’s clarification enables a Board of Education to expand the definition of “excused absence” for a student’s illness, medical appointments, college visits, and other reasonable absences. The Board of Education will be discussing and revising its recently adopted Attendance Policy and Regulation based on the NJDOE’s clarification at its October 15, 2014 Board Meeting.
